The 1988 Peugeot 205 GTI 1.6 is a true icon of the hot hatch genre. This lightweight and agile car was designed to provide an exciting driving experience, and it quickly gained a cult following among car enthusiasts around the world. It was declared "car of the decade" by CAR Magazine in 1990. It also won What Car?'s Car of the Year for 1984.
The GTI 1.6 was powered by a 1.6-liter, four-cylinder engine that produced 117 horsepower and 134 Nm of torque. This engine was paired with a four-speed manual transmission, which provided precise shifts and allowed drivers to make the most of the engine's power. The GTI 1.6 could accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 8.6 seconds and had a top speed of 196 kmh. The shorter stroke 1.6 litre engine is famed for being revvy and eager.
The exterior of the 1988 Peugeot 205 GTI 1.6 was designed with classic hot hatch styling cues, with a small and aerodynamic profile that exudes sportiness. It featured a unique front grille, side skirts, and a rear spoiler, which helped to improve the car's aerodynamics. The GTI 1.6 also featured a sport-tuned suspension, larger brakes, and lightweight alloy wheels.
The interior of the GTI 1.6 was designed to be functional and driver-focused, with a simple yet sporty design. It featured sport seats upholstered in cloth, a small sport steering wheel, and a basic sound system. The GTI 1.6 did not come with air conditioning or power windows, which helped to keep the car's weight down.
The 1988 Peugeot 205 GTI 1.6 was a joy to drive, with precise handling and excellent feedback that allowed drivers to feel connected to the road. The suspension was well-tuned and provided a firm yet comfortable ride, even on rough roads. The brakes were also powerful and provided excellent stopping power.
The 205 is still often treated as a benchmark in group car tests of the newest GTI models or equivalent. Peugeot itself has never truly recreated this success in future GTI models. In October 2020 Peugeot announced that their heritage brand "l'Aventure Peugeot" would make a factory restoration program for the 205 GTI available in 2021 as part of the company's 210th anniversary celebration.
